Magic Dance

I’m a movie buff, I love movies. We all have at least one movie in our DVD collection that we keep in a separate place (no, not porn…sometimes). But I’m talking about a movie which you wouldn’t want your friends to know you actually like let alone love.

Example:

Hardcore thug – yo, go get my Menace II Society DVD, son.
Thug’s friend – [shuffles through DVD collection] – Maid in Manhattan? The fuck is this?
Hardcore Thug – uh uh uh...it’s my sisters!
HC Thug’s friend – you don’t have a sister!

Anyway, back to my movie. Well I have a couple of movies in my arsenal. Here is numbero uno:

Labrinth

Jareth -You remind me of the babe
Goblin - What babe?
Jareth - The babe with the power!
Goblin - What power?
Jareth - Power of voodoo!
Goblin - Who do?
Jareth - You do!
Goblin - Do what?
Jareth - Remind me of the babe!

Oh man this movie is gold for me. Creepy creatures, a dog named Ambrosius, inappropriate attire around kids (see the bulge), a romantic underage love story hidden inside a children's movie. Yes, David Bowie is a borderline hebephile in this movie. Look at his attire below. Not suitable for kids.

I’m not making this up. Go get the DVD and watch the movie up until the part where she bites into the poisoned peach...COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOVIE FROM THEN ON. What happened to the kid’s movie I was watching? Why is David Bowie giving her the “look”? You know the look.

Why is Jennifer Connelly all of a sudden hot in the ballroom scene? I’d hit it (if she was legal of course). Jim Henson is trying to pull a fast one on all of us!

[David Bowie – Within you] - Your eyes can be so cruel! Just as I can be so cruel! Oh I do believe in you! ---What the fuck is this? Why are you trying to bang a thirteen your old, Bowie? Listen to the song ‘Within you’ from the movie, tell me if that song is appropriate for a kids movie! What happened to the singing and fun with all the weird creatures? This movie is so far off that I love it. You got to love those crazy 80’s movies that leave you wondering. I’m on to you Jim Henson. I wonder if he forgot what movie he was doing halfway through. It’s possible! R.I.P Jim, you sly devil you.

Being a women I can't relate to getting my "hood pass revoked" but I feel you. I'm not a DVD dominatrix but I have a few flicks that I keep to myself.
-The Sound of Music is one.
-Memento and Requiem for a Dream are two others.
Some people just wouldn't understand.
But you make some HILARIOUS points on that movie. It's so classic, I remember watching that and others with my mom (she's superbly cool :) and trying to explain scenes to others to find out the names. Some people just had NO clue.

Kudos kudos. :)

Oh.
And you probably know this, but a LOT of songs and movies back in the days had ulterior meanings and were based on mocking or dismembering the meaning behind other classics.
I could go on but you're probably lost.
I talked about movies like The Wizard of Oz with a sociology Prof. and learned a lot about what went on behind the scenes and what the director had in mind initially.
Anywhoo, wasn't there a book on this movie?
Somehow I feel like I read about it first in 5th grade...
Hmmm...

Ok first off Memento and Requiem for a Dream are awesome movies and shouldn’t be hidden.

Movies like Labyrinth, Little Monsters and The Rocky Horror Picture Show gets your hood pass revoked. I'll save RHPS for a future post ; )

Always go on, it's hard to lose me. Unless you start talking about quantum physics or something. Then you could kindly leave j/k. Labyrinth definitely has an ulterior motive. Chris Hansen is somewhere shaking his head right now.

Agh!
I had an awesome example of a low-key but incredible movie that would prove to you why I keep them hidden.
I don't know, some people would get the wrong idea. You don't understand, in my collection I have things like Girl, Interrupted, Prozac Nation, Requiem for a Dream, Donnie Darko, Memento, The Butterfly Effect, The Virgin Suicides, and the list goes on. Get the picture?
People start to question my sanity.
But, because of my mom, I have the Classics as well.
All of them she reads into and explains what they personified back in the day.
It's crazy. What happened to hits like Cool World? ;)
We lack the creativity they had back then.
But, Quentin Tarantino is still amazing :)

*The real meaning behind the original story of
"The Wizard of Oz"
?

"As Dorothy takes her first step onto the yellow brick road, the lyrics are "With, without, who can deny, that's what the fighting's all about." Well, The Wizard of Oz as a story is an expansive metaphor for the debate in the 1896 elections over using the Gold Standard as the measure for currency. The Scarecrow represents dumb farmers, the tinman is a heartless industrial worker, the lion is a loud but impotent William Jennings Bryan, the Wizard is the US President, McKinley and Emerald City is Washington D.C. which is entirely green - money based.

But anyway, the fighting is over Gold, which of course, is represented by the Yellow Brick Road!"

-Gotta Love Google, meng :)

You're beginning to make me wonder about myself lol.

'Girl, Interrupted, Requiem for a Dream, Donnie Darko, Memento, The Butterfly Effect, The Virgin Suicides,' --I like all of these movies. Will my sanity be questioned now?

I remember watching Cool World almost everyday after school in junior high because it played on HBO every other hour. Classic. Films are not what they use to be. Case in point 'Ruins'. Don't see this, it's crap. Movies nowadays have a great premise and kill it either with the acting, dialogue, or special effects.

Can you keep a secret? I was never a fan of The Wizard of Oz. Eh.

Sasha Sapio said...

Lol. Secret will be well kept.

I was just trying to make a point. That movie was my best example about the hidden meanings.
And, no, your sanity will not be questioned as long as you throw flicks like Cool World in the mix.
Can you keep a secret?
You remind me of J. Depp from Edward Scissorhands.

Don't ask.

lol.

I know, just an example. I was just stating how I don’ like it. I feel like a terrorist or something whenever I explain to someone I don’t care much about the Wiz of Oz. Cowardly lion, tin man, scarecrow…yay cool. Cool cool. Sorry I don’t like it, sue me lol

Good example though

You ever notice how certain movies drag you down memory lane and evoke feelings you had while watching them?

Maybe I'll save it for a post.

Inspiring young grasshopper :)

The Wizard of Oz wasn't my fave but I liked it, it scared, saddened and intrigued me.
If a movie can deeply evoke such feelings from me it at least gets a thumbs up in my book.
I'm weird.
You suc.
End of story :p

*Would you consider Labyrinth a musical?

I luuuurve musicals ;)

Cruz said...

idk if i'll consider it a musical per say. But it's funny how many movies I love that happens to fall into that category (Nightmare before Christmas, Labyrinth, Nightmare before Christmas, Sweeney Todd - although the last two are musicals.

Need to regain my manhood...uh...I like Rambo, kick ass movie.

; )
